Genesis 5 details the generations from Adam to Noah, outlining the long lifespans and lineages of the patriarchs, with Enoch notably taken by God before his death.
Genesis 5 has similarities with other ancient Near Eastern genealogical texts, such as the Sumerian King List, which also contains long-lived figures. However, it should be noted that the biblical genealogy is distinct in its focus on individuals and their familial relationships, rather than on kings and their reigns. Critical scholars also examine the theological implications of the text, such as the story of Enoch, which may reflect an early belief in the possibility of avoiding death through a close relationship with the divine.
